Located in West Sussex, Brighton has long been popular with visitors from across the UK and overseas. It is known as a vibrant city, which has a great arts scene and exciting nightlife. Below, we reveal five things that Brighton is famous for.
The Royal Pavilion
Also commonly known as the Brighton Pavillion, the Royal Pavillion is a Grade I listed building, which was once a royal residence. It was built in three stages, with construction first starting in 1787. The property was created for George, the Prince of Wales, as a seaside retreat. In 1811, he became Prince Regent. The style of the place is Indo-Saracenic, which was a design-type that was very much prevalent throughout the 19th century in India. The current appearance of the Royal Pavilion features minarets and domes, which are the work of John Nash. These features were added to the building in 1815. Not only is the building itself impressive, but so is the Royal Pavilion Garden. This is the grounds of the Pavilion, which have a number of different types of plants. Organic methods are used to maintain the plants and there is a cafe here.
Brighton is also well-known for Brighton Pride. This is an event that is held every year in order to promote both diversity and equality, as well as advancing education in order to eradicate discrimination against the LGBT community. The event is always held in the first week of August. It tends to consist of an array of club parties, as well as the Gay Village Party, a festival event that takes place in Preston Park, and a parade through the centre of the city. Since 2013, there has also been a Pride Dog Show, as well as an Arts and Film Festival. It is believed that around 450,000 people head to the city of Brighton during this part of the summer. It is without a doubt the most popular festival in the city. However, Brighton is known for playing host to a wide range of events and festivals throughout the year.

This is an artificial marina, which is a significant landmark in Brighton. Surrounded by the popular beach area, the marina features a working harbour alongside a number of commercial, retail, and leisure activities. The marina was constructed between the years of 1971 and 1979. However, there have been developments that have continued on the marina since then. There are a number of different attractions and businesses that you will find around this area, including various hotels and places to eat. Needless to say, a trip to Brighton Marina is not complete without enjoying some fish and chips.
Veteran Car Run
Brighton is also well-known amongst motor enthusiasts for playing host to the world’s longest-running motoring event. This is the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. This event first took place back in 1896. It was then revived in 1927 and has taken place most years since then. In order for cars to qualify for the event, they must have been built prior to 1905. The Veteran Car Run also represents the biggest gathering of veteran cars across the world. In 2009, there were 484 veteran cars. This represents a big jump when compared to the 37 starters back in 1927. The event starts from Hyde Park, in London, at sunrise, on the first Sunday in November, and then it finishes at Brighton. There are two stops along the way. The first is for a coffee in Crawley, and then the second is at Preston Park, which is in the suburb of Brighton.
Brighton and Hove Albion
Last but not least, we have the football club of Brighton and Hove Albion. The team is usually just referred to as Brighton. They are currently in the Premier League, and they play their football matches at American Express Community Stadium, simply called the AMEX by most. The stadium has also been designed so that other events and sports can be put on here. In fact, in 2015, some matches from the Rugby World Cup were hosted here. The football club has taken massive leaps forward in recent years. They were experiencing financial difficulties and found themselves in the fourth tier of English football in the late 1990s. They narrowly avoided relegation from the Football League in 1997. After successive promotions, they made their way up to the top flight, where they now play the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
