5 Things Peterborough is Famous For

Peterborough might not be the first city that you think of when you’re trying to decide where to visit in England. However, this underrated city has a lot going for it, from its beautiful cathedral to its green spaces and passion for sport. The Cambridgeshire city is a great place to visit, whether you’re already seeing a nearby town or city, such as Cambridge or Leicester, or you’re just looking for somewhere interesting to check out. It’s also only about two hours from London, or as little as under an hour on the train.

Here are some of the top things Peterborough is known for, and some excellent reasons to visit the city.

1. Peterborough Cathedral

As a cathedral city, Peterborough obviously has a lovely cathedral that’s worth visiting. Originally built as an abbey in the early 12th century, you can find the cathedral in the centre of the city. In fact, it’s right next to the city’s main shopping centre. It’s recognised by many as one of the best examples of a cathedral in England, with beautiful architecture and decor. Among the various notable people buried at the cathedral are Catherine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII, and Mary, Queen of Scots.

If you want to visit the cathedral, you can enter for free and have a look around. They also offer tours of either highlights of the cathedral or a tower tour of the upper levels of the cathedral.
