How to view and download your income history from the Government Gateway
Applying for a mortgage? Your lender will want official proof of income to assess your affordability. One of the most reliable documents you can give them is your Income Tax and employment history, downloaded straight from HMRC through the Government Gateway.
It’s a trusted, official record of what you’ve earned — and you can access it yourself in a few minutes. This step-by-step guide walks you through it.
Visit the HMRC sign-in page
Sign in
Log in with your Government Gateway user ID and password. Already registered? Sign in and jump to Step 4. Not registered yet? Continue to Step 3.

Register (new users only)
Since 9 February 2026, new users register through GOV.UK One Login rather than the older Government Gateway sign-up. Already have a 12-digit Government Gateway user ID? Just sign in as normal at Step 2. Setting up takes a few minutes:
Open the PAYE section
Once signed in, select “Pay As You Earn (PAYE)” to manage your employment and income information.

View your income history
Select “View and print your Income Tax and employment history” to access your records for the past five years.

Open the tax year you need
In your PAYE Income Tax history, click the relevant year — for example “View 2025 to 2026 tax year summary” — to see the detail.

Print your income summary
On the “Your PAYE Income Tax summary” page for the selected year, scroll down and select “Print this page”. This gives you a hard copy of your income summary to use for a mortgage application or your own records.
